Breast Cancer Awareness Month | When it’s OK to say bOObies in public

Breast Cancer

breast-cancer-ribbon-2As most of us already know, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Pink Ribbons are everywhere! So…we decided to try and provide a little context to what this whole breast cancer hullabaloo is about. (’cause its not just an excuse to say “boobies” and “tatas” !!)

The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) Organization

The NBCAM  was founded in 1985 by AstraZeneca with the purpose of promoting breast cancer awareness, sharing information on the disease, and providing better access to screening services (mammograms).  They also placed an emphasis on encouraging mammograms as the most valuable tool in the fight against breast cancer. Reason being….early detection is crucial! Their website (www.nbcam.org) has some great resources, including how to find a Mammography Center in your area.

The Pink Ribbon

The most common symbol we see for breast cancer awareness is the Pink Ribbon. They are widely used to demonstrate our support for women (and men) who have Breast Cancer, and were first handed out by the Susan G. Komen Foundation in 1991 at the Race for the Cure in New York City.  The ribbon started to become well known a few years later when editor-in-chief of Self magazine, Alexandra Penney placed the pink ribbon on her NBCAM issue of Self Magazine & enlisted Evelyn Lauder of Estee Lauder to distribute them at Estee Lauder Counters.  Over the years, we have seen this pink ribbon displayed in all shapes and styles:

Incredible Dance Routine on the Impact of Breast Cancer

Celebrities

It can be hard to put into words the impact breast cancer has had on so many.  With that said, Tyce Diorio, a choreographer from So You Think You Can Dance put together a powerful dance piece displaying the impact it’s had on him.  It’s incredibly touching, and dancers Melissa and Ade performed it beautifully commanding your attention to this very hard-hitting topic. Enjoy! (…and don’t forget your tissues)

Phil Mickelson’s Mom Diagnosed with Breast Cancer

Celebrities

The past couple of months have been rough for pro golfer Phil Mickelson and his family. As of earlier this week bad news has struck again, not only has Mickelson’s wife Amy been diagnosed with breast cancer, Mickelson’s mother, Mary, has been diagnosed with breast cancer as well.

photo-from-mickelsons-official-website_amy-phil-mickelson_rydercup-2008According to the Examiner, “Phil’s sister Tina reported the news to the San Diego Union-Tribune.  Tina told the paper that she wished for the news of her mother to be made known so that Mary could receive the same prayers and support that Amy did from the players and fans of the PGA Tour.”

She is reported to have surgery at the same hospital, Texas’ M.D. Anderson Cancer in Houston, where Mickelson’s wife, Amy, had surgery last week.  Amy has had positive reports after her surgery a couple weeks ago and is currently undergoing treatment.

Mary Mickelson, who still lives with her husband Phil Sr., in the same San Diego house where they raised their three children, was honored in 1998 as “Mother of the Year” by the San Diego chapter of the March of Dimes. She said at the time, “I don’t know if I’ve done anything extra than other mothers. We’ve always been involved and have just been there,” which has been reported by the Daily News.

According to an article on the ESPN website, Sarah Strange, a breast cancer survivor and wife of former Ryder Cup captain Curtis Strange, said “Amy Mickelson’s outgoing personality would play a big part in her recovery. She’s such an upbeat person, and I think she’ll approach this in the same way, moving forward with confidence.”

Amy will continue to have tests over the next two weeks. Hopefully, with the support of family and friends, she will get through this difficult time.

Unfortunately, Phil is not the only pro golfer with a family relation to cancer. Phil’s best enemy, Tiger Woods lost his father, Earl Woods back in 2006 to prostate cancer. I dug up an article from Sport Illustrated where Woods talked about his beloved father,
