Styling it while I still can...

Styling it while I still can...

Well today is the day my hair comes off. It’s not coming out much, only a few strands. It probably would hold out another week or so but that’s it. I’m not holding on to a lost cause. I don’t have enough hair in the first place to afford it thinning out in the first place! This is my dedication to this process. There is no going back now.
My throat is a bit sore this morning too, just a tickle. My tongue is sensitive and my nose is sort of running. I’m certainly feeling a bit off.
It’s 6.30am and I sit on my bed with my feet flat on the floor, the laptop on the bed-table.
It is here I am reminded of the way I’ve sat in bed ever since I first got this computer. With it resting on my lap with the screen open at my diaphragm and chest. Could this be a contributing factor? I sure have spent many, many hours like this.
The thing that has got me through this hospital experience with a smile on my face is the internet. I have talked for people for hours and hours and hours. Everybody knows and I mean everybody – this is a big factor in this experience, just how public it goes.

Keepin it O' Natural

Keepin it O' Natural

I had woken when they brought the breakfast tray in about 7.30 but lay in a bit of a stupor for a while. Thank god the Oncologist came in today and said they were decreasing those Dexie drugs yet more. This is why I am not sleeping. I know that taking sleeping tablets will not assist in this in any case. He said ‘We’ll get this thing’ as he left.

Dad came in with the first doses of the complimentary medicines the Compounding Naturopath has issued for me. All the liquid compounds be combined into one 1½ litres of water to be drunk throughout the day. There was also a mega vitamin C dose to be drunk two times in the day and a Chinese tea that is a stand-alone treatment over there to be drunk at mid morning and afternoon. Other than this I am keeping up with the juices Dad makes me every morning and eating all of the meals they bring.

Well, there it was, today. I was moved to Calvary Hospital. I get moved here and start losing it in the car almost immediately. I was being childish and plain rude. I could see the way I was behaving but had no desire to change it. I was happy to rest in the fact I had every right to be chucking a tantrum.

A lady came in and introduced herself as the hospital doctor. She sat down and explained that my behaviour and reactions were the result of the drugs I had been given to stop inflammation. She said the drugs have a mildly psychotic effect when given in doses (mildly??) and that they prevent sleep (surprise, surprise – I slept one hour last night). Then she went on to talk about the effect that sleep deprivation has on behaviour and mental state.

Eva

Eva is a courageous and inspiring woman who I’ve had the privilege of getting to know through our community. She has overcome enormous odds and lived/traveled all over the world, as you will quickly see by reading her profile. Residing in Australia, Eva is Know Cancer’s first International Member…much love to our Aussie friends on the other side of the globe :) Currently, she is battling Hodgkins Lymphoma and was brave enough to share her journal entries from the first experiences as a cancer patient. Over the coming months we will all get a closer look at her bravery as she reveals deep thoughts, emotions and incredible insights. Through these entries, we will get a glimpse into her life and stand right beside her through this journey. I know you will be as moved by Eva as I was…

So, I’m finally in hospital. When I went in to see Dr P on an emergency visit today with my throat twice it’s regular size, he did something about it and told me to get my ass down to the hospital straight away, I may have glandular fever.

Grafton Roll, an Old Dream from a Young Inspiration

Events
Grafton and Dlynn Roll

Grafton and Dlynn Roll

At our first Know Cancer Community Awareness Fair, we partnered with the most informative and influential Cancer Organizations to heighten cancer awareness in Orlando…our home! The day was filled with live music, tasty treats, and raffle giveaways, all to raise money for the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute.  At the event, a young man named Grafton Roll approached us asking if he could read a speech that he wrote. His speech was originally done as a school assignment to honor Martin Luther King with a work inspired from King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech.  Since his mother has battled cancer twice (Lymphoma), he chose to write his speech on the eradication of the disease.

When Grafton delivered this speech at the event in front of hundreds of people…everyone stopped to listen.  Know Cancer thanks Grafton and his family for their commitment and support…and for allowing us to share his speech with our community. Without further a due…

I Have a Dream

I say to you today, my fellow race, that there is a problem.  This problem is as old as life itself.  This problem causes hundreds of thousands of deaths every year.  It crushes families and kills friends.
