The Effect of a Woman Endoscopist on Adherence to Screening Colonoscopy in Women


Inclusion Criteria:



- Asymptomatic women age 50-69 years who do not appear to be up to date with CRC
screening based on the absence of billing claims indicating completion of a
colonoscopy within the past ten years, flexible sigmoidoscopy or double contrast
barium enema within the past five years, and fecal occult blood testing (FOBT) within
the past year.

Exclusion Criteria:

- Presence of significant comorbidities (history of colorectal adenocarcinoma,
colectomy or ileostomy, an active cancer or terminal diagnosis, prosthetic heart
valve(s), morbid obesity (over 250 pounds), respiratory disease requiring the use of
oxygen, unstable angina, end-stage renal disease, and ongoing use of warfarin,
heparin, or insulin).

Allocation: Randomized, Endpoint Classification: Efficacy Study, Intervention Model: Parallel Assignment, Masking: Double Blind (Subject, Investigator, Outcomes Assessor), Primary Purpose: Health Services Research

Outcome Measure:

Proportion of women who complete screening colonoscopy when given a written invitation to request a woman endoscopist vs. no invitation to request a woman endoscopist.

Outcome Time Frame:

Four months of referral for colonoscopy
