Choosing cancer treatment centers: what to know
Cancer treatment centers range from hospital cancer programs and community infusion centers to radiation centers and the large academic centers designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Listings affiliated with an NCI-Designated Cancer Center are marked, and hospitals matched to Medicare data show Medicare's overall rating and patient survey results.
The right center depends on your diagnosis: for common cancers, good care is often available close to home; for rare or complex cancers, a specialized center may be worth the travel, sometimes just for a consultation or second opinion.
Questions to ask
- How experienced is the center with my specific cancer?
- Will a team of specialists review my case together?
- What support services do you offer (nurse navigators, social work, nutrition, financial counseling)?
- Do they accept my insurance or Medicare, and what will I pay out of pocket?
