I have a thymoma about 3.5 centimeters big. Can they remove the thymus with scopes and cameras or do they need to crack open my sternum?
Asked September 16, 2011
I had a CT done last week and they called me telling me I have a thymoma about 3.5 centimeters big. My Urologist ordered the CT to check on my kidneys, which were fine and spotted this tumor. He thinks it is probably benign but is referring me to a cardiologist in 2 weeks. From what I have seen on the web, in most of these cases they remove the thymus, I think. If so, can that be done with scopes and cameras or do they need to crack open my sternum? I just want to have a small idea of what I might expect and not to worry too much. thx, Mike
Expert answer
Hi Mike,
It may be possible to do so depending on the location of the tumor itself. An experienced thoracic surgeon will be a great resource as to the next necessary step with surgical resection. Be sure to ask them if it can be done by Video Assisted Thoracotomy.
