In lieu of flowers when she passes away, which research program would greatly benefit to send memorials to?

Dr. Wascher,
My mom was founded to have adenocarcinoma in her upper left lobe. She is 83 years old and a life long smoker. This was founded on her cxr last May before going to surgery to repair a broken leg. Her oncologist approximated five years left for her.
I know that you have done a great deal of research in oncology. In lieu of flowers when she passes away, which research program would greatly benefit (has the greatest need) to send memorials to? Is it better to be specific or general i.e. American Cancer, American Lung, etc.
Thank you for you time in answering this question.

I am sorry to hear of your mother's recent diagnosis of lung cancer. I certainly hope that her oncologists will be able to help her to maintain a high quality of life for as long as possible.
It is very thoughtful of you to consider a donation in your mother's memory. Certainly, there are many worthwhile organizations that you might consider donating money to, and I would not want to unduly influence you in making this important decision. At the same time, approximately 95% of all lung cancer cases can be prevented, simply by avoiding tobacco. Therefore, for this particular type of cancer, prevention is far more effective than the available potential cures. The American Cancer Society and the American Lung Association are two excellent organizations that have strong tobacco abuse prevention programs, and in my opinion, they are worthy of your consideration.
