Know Cancer

My husband was found to have cancer in his right kidney six years ago.

Asked September 11, 2010

My husband was found to have cancer in his right kidney six years ago. He had a cryosurgery at Barnes Jewish Hospital, which lasted for four years and the cancer returned. He had another cryosurgery which lasted two years and the cancer returned. Could he now have a single incision laparoscopic partial nephrectomy at Ellis Fischel? He is 81 years of age and in good health except for the kidney cancer.

Expert answer

Hi, that may be possible but it is very difficult to answer without additional information. It really depends on the skill of the surgeon and the location of the previous cancers. I dont know about Ellis Fischel and the capabilities that they have either. If he cannot have a partial nephrectomy then a complete nephrectomy should eliminate the disease. There are many new options available for those with advanced kidney cancer which are FDA approved.
