Hi. In 2009 I had a total thyroidectomy, dx was hurthle cell tumor. Pathology deduced the tumor was benign. Lately I have had dysphagia, SOB, and a general feeling of something stuck in my throat. I had a CT which revealed something suspicious. I then had a PET scan which showed a SUV value of 2 where my thyroid was. Is it possible if there was thyroid tissue left over, the hurthle cell could come back?
Expert answer
Hi,
Given that you had a hurthle cell tumor taken out, the chances of recurrent disease present is very low. Depending on when your surgery was done, the PET scan may still show residual activity present due to scar tissue/fibrosis formation. If any thyroid tissue is present in your body, you may want to ask your doctor about checking thyroglobulin levels and monitoring your TSH while on surveillance. If you still have doubts then talk to your doctor about seeing an endocrinilogist as well.
Hope this helps!
