How many types of cancer are there?
Expert answer
As I discuss in my recent book, A Cancer Prevention Guide for the Human Race," there are approximately 150 different diseases that are collectively called "cancer."
While many of these tumors have very unique biologies, they all share the three most important traits of cancer: (1) The cells of these malignant tumors can divide and reproduce forever (unlike normal cells), (2) the cells from cancerous tumors can invade into surrounding normal tissues, and (3) cancer cells can spread ("metastasize") to other areas and organs throughout the body.
