Know Cancer

I was diagnosed with NHL follicular Lymphoma in 2007. I am just wondering if I really need to have a scan.

Dear Dr. Jag, I was diagnosed with NHL follicular Lymphoma in 2007. I had R-CHOP and my scans have been clear since then. My last scan was in July of 2009. I thought my Dr. would do another scan in a year...but 6 months after my last scan...he mentioned he wanted to do a bone marrow biopsy. I thought was kind of odd. He did not offer a reason he wanted to do it...but then saw how nervous it made me and he said that we could just wait. 3 months later...he brought back up the bone marrow biopsy again. I had the biopsy done...and it showed no signs of Lymphoma. I am just wondering if I really need to have a scan. I know you can have Lymphoma WITHOUT marrow involvement...so that worries me. Thanks for any suggestions! Sincerely, Kim

Hi Kim, it's hard for me to say what your Doctor is intending or how aggressively they feel you should be monitored. I tend to scan my patients with high grade follicular lymphoma several times a year unless they are in remission. I would then scan yearly if a complete remission has been achieved. Ask your Doctor about getting a PET scan if one hasent been done yet. Congrats on no lymphoma in your marrow!
