Asked June 3, 2010

Dear Dr., I was diognosed with Follicular Lymphoma a few days ago from my right tonsil, it was very large and hard to swllow. The doctor did a Biopsy and it came back poitive. Now he said he will do a bone marrow check and all the scans necessary to see if they find anything else, Is it normal to wait 2 weeks after testing positive to do other test? Shouldn't I get into a place like Mayo in Rochester right away? I am really upset and hard to function especially when I work full time and have 3 children 15, 13, and 9. Is this cancer going to spread fast if not taken care of right now instead of waiting another 2 weeks for tests?

Expert answer

Hi, I agree that this workup should take the utmost priority to know whether or not this is cancer has any aggressive features. That time frame seem a bit delayed in my opinion and I do agree that you probably need to get to Mayo in Rochester or MD Anderson for another opinion. If your quality of life is deteriorating then you probably need to start treatment as soon as possible. Find a center that is willing to work with you as quickly as possible - there are many out there. Keep us updated & take care.
