My Husband's oncologist says now is not the time to lose weight. How can this be a good idea?
Asked January 23, 2010
My husband has colorectal cancer. He is in the middle (14 of 28) radiation/chemo treatments. Prior to his diagnosis he was trying to lose weight (since he was 50lbs overweight). His oncologist says now is not the time to lose weight, and my husband should eat whatever he wants (healthy foods, of course). He's actually gained weight. How can this be a good idea?
Expert answer
Hi, Yes I think its a great idea and I agree with your oncologist as well because following chemoradiation & possibly surgery he may need further chemotherapy. He needs to maintain his weight so as to not become malnourished from any more aggressive therapy that may follow. After all his treatments are complete and he is in remission then he can resume a healthy lifestyle (aka "Dr. Jag lifestyle") to improve on his body, mind & spirit. Thanks, Simeon Jaggernauth DO.
