Know Cancer

My wife has been diagnosed with CML lukemia.

Asked January 22, 2011

My wife has been diagnosed with CML lukemia. She has been taking medication for the past 3 years. This summer she was in full remission, but I found out she was seeing another man. She felt he was the reason for her remission because he made her feel great, now that she and I are trying to fix our marriage her counts are going back up and I feel responsible for this. The weather here has also been a major negative impact as well. Are these two things related to her remission?? If so then I should get out of her life?!?!?

Expert answer

Hi, the above factors your wife mentioned are completely unrelated and have no bearing on her cancer. Feeling good because of your lifestyle choices and being healthy are completely unrelated - especially when it comes to cancer. I would suggest that you get marriage counseling if you plan to stay together. Otherwise, don't blame yourself for her infidelity or excuses as to why her disease progressed. She and her new lover can deal with the ramification of her choices.
Sorry to hear you are taking the blame for this,

Dr. Jag
