Dear Dr. Jag, We have a friend who is diagnosed with Advanced Mylo Leukemia. He is 70. He was not able to handle chemo. He has had one episode of bleeding out of his eye. He is now having to have transfussions. Do you have any advice? The Doctor here has given him 2 months left to live. I thank you for any information you may have. Thank you. Sincerely, Sonjia Harlen
Expert answer
Hi Sonia, Sorry to hear about your friend - his situation is very complicated and not easy to give a simple answer regarding his care. Unfortunately when patients fail to respond to chemotherapy the lifespan can be short and it really depends on what is going on with the leukemia. Transfusions provide the needed support for bleeding and may reduce his suffering - but, ultimately it is only supportive in nature. Sometimes there are clinical trials that may be available in your area - ask your doctor if any trials exist where you are and if he would be a candidate for one.
Take care,
Simeon Jaggernauth, DO.
