Friday, October 8 is Lee National Denim Day – a day when the nation comes together to put on their jeans in exchange for a $5 contribution to the fight against breast cancer, with the goal of raising millions of dollars in a single day. The power of the idea lies in its simplicity – just start a team with co-workers, clubs, organizations, friends or family and wear jeans for a $5 donation to the Women’s Cancer Programs of the Entertainment Industry Foundation.

Since its inception in 1996, Denim Day has raised nearly $80 million for the fight against breast cancer and unites almost one million people nationwide each year. Teams across the country wear their jeans in solidarity to show their commitment to finding a cure, and the campaign has grown into one of the country’s largest single-day fundraisers for breast cancer. It’s such an easy way to make a difference with just a $5 donation, something almost anyone can do even in these difficult times.

This year, actress Felicity Huffman, star of ABC’s Desperate Housewives, has been named the 2010 Ambassador. Huffman, whose character Lynnette Scavo has battled cancer on the show, appears in a new public service campaign that encourages people to wear their jeans on Friday, October 8, in exchange for a $5 donation to support crucial breast cancer research and support services.

To mark their 15th year anniversary of fighting breast cancer, Felicity Huffman and Lee National Denim Day released a video announcement of this year’s campaign. The video is titled “Join Felicity Huffman in Fighting Breast Cancer 2010” and can be viewed by visiting (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rq1eBIsJ74).

Since 1996, Lee National Denim Day has attracted many celebrities to join its cause as ambassadors. This prestigious list includes actors and actresses: Christina Applegate, Yasmine Bleeth, Patricia Arquette, Lucy Liu, Charlie Sheen and Pierce Brosnan.

Registration is open and people nationwide can sign up for Denim Day 2010. Groups and individuals can register by visiting www.denimday.com or by calling 1.800.521.5533 to receive a comprehensive participation kit, which includes educational materials about breast cancer and supplies for easy coordination.

The money raised through the campaign will help the Women’s Cancer Programs of EIF and the Cancer Support Community, uniting The Wellness Community and Gilda’s Club Worldwide. For more information about these programs, please visit www.denimday.com and click on “Where the $ Goes.”

Dear Friend,

The suffering of a person who has cancer, unlike other serious illnesses, raises several issues that make it especially unique and difficult to alleviate. On the one hand, being diagnosed with this illness means having to face up to vital decisions that are deep and
painful, both for the patient and his/her family and friends. On the other, facing up to cancer means exposing oneself to the unwanted and toxic side-effects of the different types of oncological therapies that include chemotherapy, surgery or radiotherapy. Finally, on top of this, there is a lack of proper information about the illness, prognosis, treatment alternatives, etc, a lack that these persons, unfortunately, have to bear far too often.

The latter issue, a lack of knowledge about one’s illness, is especially relevant for oncology patients. This is, in part, down to the constant changes and numerous developments that are fortunately taking place each year in the fight against cancer. This continuous progress makes including these changes and developments in the day to
day of cancer care complicated, even for the specialists themselves, and, in fact, this situation means that treatment recommendations can vary from one doctor to another, with the subsequent stress that this provokes in the patient. But this stress is also caused by the taboos and preconceived ideas that remain in society about cancer, death, the
toxicity of the treatment, etc, as well as the frequent lack of resources in our field (a lack of expert staff, limited consultation time, etc) that all together fail to neutralize this lack of information.

It is no surprise, then, that the blanket of darkness that spreads over this terrible illness becomes a habitual and quite significant element of the suffering of those diagnosed with cancer. For this reason, we, at Fuseon (Second Opinion in Oncology
Foundation, www.fuseon.org), work to fill this gap and fulfill this important necessity, as there are many foundations and resources dedicated to cancer research, which is without a doubt fundamental, but few dedicated to directly “lending a hand” to the
person suffering the cancer”. And of the latter, as far as we know, Fuseon is the only one that focuses specifically on helping the cancer patient get a better understanding of his/her illness, treatment and its specific nuances in a qualified and expert way through a Second Opinion.

So, our founding mission consist of providing with this Second Opinion service on behalf of the patients who have access to limited financial resources and who, therefore, have no possibility of getting access to it on their own.

And for that to occur, we are in a real need to raise funds.

We have built up a singular and attractive webpage named "The Fall of the Cancer Wall", for fund rising with this goal in mind:

www.thefallofthecancerwall.org

The ‘Fall of the cancer Wall’ symbolises the obstacles that people with cancer and their families constantly face during their illness. At times, this wall is even harder to overcome than the illness itself and consists of a lack of understanding and knowledge, suffering and fear. Often, information alone is powerful enough to knock down the
wall; a second opinion on the illness can help many people face up to
cancer, without having to face the obstacles.

For all of these reasons, please let me take the liberty of encouraging you to take a look at our website or to contact us in order to get to know us better and, if you share our vision and are prepared to help these patients, I respectfully ask you to spread the word and to help us knock down this wall, symbolically built of thousands of bricks, so that, with your help, we can provide many patients and their families in financial struggle with free Second Opinion information on their cancer.

Thank you very much,
Emiliano Calvo, MD
Co-Founder, Fuseon Foundation

I know that while my mother was going through her battle with cancer, I felt alone in my role as supporter. I was away at school and unable to be with her like I should have. I was doing a bunch of research one day--and read about Mission of Hope cancer fund.

Here's there website: http://cancerfund.org/home.html

Not only were they support for my mom, both emotionally and financially, but they really helped me as well. Now that she is in remission, we both volunteer there and donate as much as we possibly can. I like to think I am helping other families that were dealing with the same, if not worse, situation that I was.
Seriously, if you want more information you should visit there website. It really helped me.

Hi! Are you looking for a way to connect with other survivors this summer? The Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition is hosting the 18th annual Against the Tide event in Hopkinton, MA on June 19, and the 11th annual Against the Tide in Brewster, MA on August 21st. Participants are invited to compete in up to three of the following events: a one-mile competitive or recreational swim, a two-mile kayak, a three-mile walk, and a 5k run. Join friends, family, and others passionate about beating cancer.

The Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition is an organization working to prevent the environmental threats to breast cancer.
If any of a person's immediate family members (parents, siblings, or children) had colorectal cancer, he's somewhat more likely to develop this disease himself. The likelihood goes up if more than one family member had colorectal cancer or if any of his relatives developed the cancer before the age of 50.

My dad has colon cancer and my mom's father also , so does it have high chances that i will also get.
Has anyone else experienced a reaction from pets while on chemo? Does Xylota affect the way a person smells, maybe? Are there any nutritional or other ways to mitigate this?

Hi Simeon! when one is considering using complementary therapies specifically Guide Imagery how would you advise them? and can you share with the community any additional thoughts. Thank YOU!

posted answer on 5/11/2010 11:41:05 PM
Hi, I believe that guided imagery is quite helpful and can make a difference in a patients recovery. Prayer, Meditation, Biometric Feedback & Hypnosis all serve a healing purpose that is not completely understood. Always talk to your doctor regardless of the method that you choose to use. Thanks, Simeon Jaggernauth, DO. http://www.DRJAG.com

New question on 5/12/2010
Thank you very much. You used the term recovery which feels positive, hopeful and uncertain. RECOVERY is an open ended word and has a sense of return. How do you use the term in consulting to your patients. Is it a state
of mind, a state of well-being, a frame of reference? Is it prescribed or self selected. Is it recovery from the disease and the fear or is it the acceptance and victory over the anxiety that comes with hearing YOU HAVE CANCER and your blood levels are rising? Words are so critical in reframing ones journey. RECOVERY old ground or new ground? These are real issues in our world! The journey is slow and the orientation and navigation seem to test ones belief the destination. Uncertainty has its place as does the mystery of survival as when we are on the ocean and all we have is our few skills and belief. Does the physician have the MAP? I wander and wonder; and believe the physician has the power to keep the winds in the sails if the words are directive and hold a potency for deep healing. I have started the guided Imagery collective to assist in navigating these unchartered waters which are the unique landscape of each being.

Thank You again.

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer amid women. Usually, the body creates healthy, normal cells, but if a cell changes into an anomalous, harmful form, it can divide rapidly and make many copies of itself, a tumor, anomalous body cells shape a lump.

If you are in your thirties, or, have a history of breast cancer in your family, there is about a 15% possibility you’ll develop breast cancer by the age of 90. That may not sound like a lot, but as far as cancer risks go that’s one of the highest out there. The best thing one can perform to lower that risk is to regularly go in for a breast cancer test.

Generally, breast cancer is a much more violent disease in younger women. Generally a lump that is cancerous will not be tender to the touch; it will be stiff, non-movable, and not change quickly in size. If a lump is gentle, it may possibly be a cyst or a swollen lymph node. Genetic counseling and genetic testing should be advisable for families who may carry a history of hereditary form of cancer.

Inflammatory breast cancer is an infrequent type of breast cancer, which includes the breast being warm, red, and swollen. The redness occurs because the cancer cells block the lymphatic vessels in the skin of the breast. It doesn’t eternally involve a

Prophylactic mastectomy is controversial and involves a number of ethical and emotional issues. But some women find it extremely effective in managing breast cancer risk. Getting rid of some parts of your body to prevent a disease from occurring is no doubt an extreme measure and therefore one should carefully weigh the pros and cons before undergoing the surgery. Here is how Prophylactic mastectomy helps prevent breast cancer in women, who are predisposed to the disease either due to strong family history of the disease or due to their genetic mutations.

The high risk women may go for genetic cancer testing to know whether they have BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. A positive test result means that a person has an increased risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer in their lifetime. However, a positive test result only tells that certain person has an increased risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer or that the person’s risk is higher as compared to general population. It can, neither tell for sure that the person will develop the disease, nor can it tell how and when the person will develop the disease. And most importantly, not all women born with harmful genetic mutation will develop breast or ovarian cancer in their lifetime.

It is now clinically established that Jewish women are at an increased risk for breast cancer due to a genetic mutation. The phenomenon of Jewish women breast cancer that is giving sleepless nights to many researchers in the 21st century probably had its origin in a DNA mutations, that occurred hundreds of years ago. The faulty gene was passed on to the next generation and the next. The net result is today Ashkenazi Jewish women are considered the major carrier of the mutated cancer causing genes called BRCA1 and BRCA2.

Here are some Jewish women breast cancer facts

1 out of every 50 Ashkenazic Jews carries either a BRCA1 mutation or BRCA2 mutation.

Specific BRCA mutations have been identified in the Ashkenazic Jews women. These two specific mutations could not be traced in the non-Jewish population.

The Jew women who are born with mutated BRCA1 have up to an 85% risk of developing breast cancer and a 44% risk of contracting ovarian cancer in their lifetimes.

This is quite amazing as we compare the Jewish women breast cancer risk with that of the general population. For the non Jewish women, it is estimated at an overall 12% risk for breast cancer, and 1% for ovarian cancer.

brca1 and brca2 mutations

If you have a symptom or screening test result that suggests cancer, your doctor must find out whether it is due to cancer or to some other cause. Your doctor may ask about your personal and family medical history. You may have a physical exam. Your doctor also may order a mammogram or other imaging procedure. These tests make pictures of tissues inside the breast. After the tests, your doctor may decide no other exams are needed. Your doctor may suggest that you have a follow-up exam later on. Or you may need to have a biopsy to look for cancer cells.

Clinical breast exam

Your health care provider feels each breast for lumps and looks for other problems. If you have a lump, your doctor will feel its size, shape, and texture. Your doctor will also check to see if it moves easily. Benign lumps often feel different from cancerous ones. Lumps that are soft, smooth, round, and movable are likely to be benign. A hard, oddly shaped lump that feels firmly attached within the breast is more likely to be cancer.

With the launch of the Know Cancer Directory, we are introducing helpful Business Resources to our Community. In order to maintain the integrity of our Community, we have decided to restrict Businesses from interacting with our Members in these areas:

-Member Profiles
-Know Cancer Blog
-Ask the Expert

We have also decided to restrict Businesses from reviewing other Businesses in the directory. Currently, we are going to allow Businesses to interact with Members in the Forum only, particularly the one titled "Cancer Resources".

If you are a Business, and would like to participate in the Community, you may create a Member profile to do so. HOWEVER, when participating in the community, you must be representing yourself, and not your business. If you have any questions regarding the relationship between Members and Businesses, please feel free to post your concerns below.

This is an ongoing, delicate process which is intended to facilitate conversation between Members and Businesses while maintaining the integrity of our Community.

Many women suffer with ovarian cancer, want to take an active part in making decisions about their medical care. It is natural to want to learn all you can about your disease and treatment choices. Knowing more about ovarian cancer helps many women cope.
Shock and stress after the diagnosis can make it hard to think of everything you want to ask your doctor. It often helps to make a list of questions before an appointment. The counselor may suggest genetic cancer testing for you and the women in your family. Genetic tests can sometimes show the presence of specific gene changes that increase the risk of ovarian cancer.
