Men are more prone to fall prey of cancer than women. It is not because of the biological difference that there is between the male and the female body, but it is due to the mind set. Men would postpone going to the doctor and would see if the medical concern can be fixed on its own.To read more: http://cancertypesinfo.com/2010/01/the-most-common-cancer-symtopms-in-men/

As many of you can understand, Vicki's life changed when she was diagnosed with cancer. But instead of letting cancer define how she was going to live, she decided to turn every day into a celebration.

Generally, breast cancer is a much more violent disease in younger women. Generally a lump that is cancerous will not be tender to the touch; it will be stiff, non-movable, and not change quickly in size. If a lump is gentle, it may possibly be a cyst or a swollen lymph node. Genetic counseling and genetic testing should be advisable for families who may carry a history of hereditary form of cancer.

Inflammatory breast cancer is an infrequent type of breast cancer, which includes the breast being warm, red, and swollen. The redness occurs because the cancer cells block the lymphatic vessels in the skin of the breast. It doesn’t eternally involve a

I have been a cancer survivor for a little over twenty two years. I have been lucky to be part of one of the oldest Camp Programs for Kids with Cancer(I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma @ 13 yo) Camp Good Days and Special Times. I have shared sometime with thoes people who were around my age who went through cancer treatments. I began having non-related health issues at the age of 29 and kind of moved away from the Programs of Camp Good Days onto other things. I have pretty much kept my upbeat attitute, but I have not taken the opportunity to help others get through their challenges with cancer. I had made a promise to myself that I would make a more concerted effort to help thoes with cancer as 2010 began. About three months ago I was asked to chaperone a trip to Orlando and Tampa with people from Camp Good Days. I will be in Florida tommorrow afternoon and I hope that this is the start of a new relationship with a program that has helped me get through an Illness at a crucial time in my life.
I will also look at volunteering at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, as well as the Local Gilda's Club. If I can help one person better cope with their cancer it will surely be a great year for me.

kavi123 on "Can Prophylactic Mastectomy Reduce Breast Cancer Risk?"

Prophylactic mastectomy is controversial and involves a number of ethical and emotional issues. But some women find it extremely effective in managing breast cancer risk. Getting rid of some parts of your body to prevent a disease from occurring is no doubt an extreme measure and therefore one should carefully weigh the pros and cons before undergoing the surgery. Here is how Prophylactic mastectomy helps prevent breast cancer in women, who are predisposed to the disease either due to strong family history of the disease or due to their genetic mutations.

The high risk women may go for genetic cancer testing to know whether they have BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. A positive test result means that a person has an increased risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer in their lifetime. However, a positive test result only tells that certain person has an increased risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer or that the person’s risk is higher as compared to general population. It can, neither tell for sure that the person will develop the disease, nor can it tell how and when the person will develop the disease. And most importantly, not all women born with harmful genetic mutation will develop breast or ovarian cancer in their lifetime.

Hi! I was so estatic to have come across this website and am looking forward to making connections with others who are facing their own challenges with cancer.

I was recently diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma called, "Subcutaneous Paniculitis-Like T-Cell Lymphoma" and I am only the 201st patient to have been diagnosed with it since it was discovered in 1991...lucky me! :0) If there is anyone out there who knows of someone, or has heard about this particular lymphoma, I am waiting with "baited breath" to hear from you!

In the meantime, please feel free to go to my homepage and learn a little bit about me, or, drop me an e-mail...I am here to lend support and prayers to whoever needs them!

Have a great weekend~

It is now clinically established that Jewish women are at an increased risk for breast cancer due to a genetic mutation. The phenomenon of Jewish women breast cancer that is giving sleepless nights to many researchers in the 21st century probably had its origin in a DNA mutations, that occurred hundreds of years ago. The faulty gene was passed on to the next generation and the next. The net result is today Ashkenazi Jewish women are considered the major carrier of the mutated cancer causing genes called BRCA1 and BRCA2.

Here are some Jewish women breast cancer facts

1 out of every 50 Ashkenazic Jews carries either a BRCA1 mutation or BRCA2 mutation.

Specific BRCA mutations have been identified in the Ashkenazic Jews women. These two specific mutations could not be traced in the non-Jewish population.

The Jew women who are born with mutated BRCA1 have up to an 85% risk of developing breast cancer and a 44% risk of contracting ovarian cancer in their lifetimes.

This is quite amazing as we compare the Jewish women breast cancer risk with that of the general population. For the non Jewish women, it is estimated at an overall 12% risk for breast cancer, and 1% for ovarian cancer.

brca1 and brca2 mutations

Hi Jim, I am extremely sorry to hear about you & your family's situation. It seems to me that you are a very strong family & will be ok. But there is a light at the end of every tunnel, you just have to have faith. I am actually a health insurance consultant in Houston, TX and I noticed your post. It seems to me your biggest obstacle is getting some kind of catastrophic & drug coverage insurance plan so that your wife CAN get her CAT scans & anything else she needs done. I do know of a plan I may be able to get your wife in as long as it is approved for Massachusetts. It would require a letter for "denial of coverage" which I'm sure you have or can get. It is through a medical research company that gives those individuals with pre-existing conditions such as cancer, diabetes & etc. the ability to obtain insurance to cover doctor's visits, lab work, in-hospital benefits, out-patient benefits like CAT scans, MRI, & etc. The research company even pays you $7.50/hr for minimum of 10hrs of work per month. If you still haven't found anything for your wife in your state, please let me know and I will do some research on my part to see if I can help your family. I don't make a commission for out of state but I don't mind at all helping good people who really needs it. You can email me at: charliekim_nba@hotmail.com

If you have a symptom or screening test result that suggests cancer, your doctor must find out whether it is due to cancer or to some other cause. Your doctor may ask about your personal and family medical history. You may have a physical exam. Your doctor also may order a mammogram or other imaging procedure. These tests make pictures of tissues inside the breast. After the tests, your doctor may decide no other exams are needed. Your doctor may suggest that you have a follow-up exam later on. Or you may need to have a biopsy to look for cancer cells.

Clinical breast exam

Your health care provider feels each breast for lumps and looks for other problems. If you have a lump, your doctor will feel its size, shape, and texture. Your doctor will also check to see if it moves easily. Benign lumps often feel different from cancerous ones. Lumps that are soft, smooth, round, and movable are likely to be benign. A hard, oddly shaped lump that feels firmly attached within the breast is more likely to be cancer.
