The drug companies argued that the opinions of the women’s experts were not

What if Asbestos Causes Cancer…Twice?

Asbestos related Mesothelioma is a well known legal issue, in large part due to heavy advertising by law firms seeking to bring legal claims on behalf of injured parties. One common issue that arises in Asbestos-related cancer cases is; what happens if a second cancer develops after the first case ends? Can the Asbestos-related cancer victim sue again? The answer is not clear, and it varies from state to state, but in 2000 the Texas Supreme Court set a major precedent for the nation in Pustejovsky v. Rapid-American Corp…. In Pustejovsky, Henry J. Pustejovsky, Jr. was exposed to asbestos

New Radioactive Cream Used as Skin Cancer Treatment

A new study of one thousand individuals in Rome found that skin cancer tumors were completely eradicated in ninety-five percent of the patients using a new type of skin cream. And thats after only one treatment! This particular therapy is for a specific type of cancer called basal cell carcinoma, which is actually the most common type of skin cancer…. The cream has not yet been approved for use, and is still undergoing further trials…but seems quite promising as an alternative to invasive surgery. It uses a radioactive isotope and kills cancerous cells in under an hour, and

Breast Cancer Cure Now Possible with New Scientific Discovery

Scientists have long understood the importance of the mitochondria, a membrane-enclosed organelle found in most eukaryotic cells. Now, the science community is now recognizing the mitochondria as the new Achilles heel of breast cancer. Studies are showing that there are now some new goals in dealing with breast, and other types of tumors. The mitochondria are responsible for producing energy in cells. This works in a negative fashion when discussing cancer cells, because their power is amplified by up to 5 times the capacity of normal cells. Says Dr. Michael Lisanti…, of the Thomas Jefferson University in

Antioxidants, Free Radicals…and Cancer

What are antioxidants and free radicals?… Free radicals (don’t you just love the name of these things?) are molecules in our bodies that have lost an electron and as a result are considered to be unstable. Free radicals affect other molecules in our bodies causing damage to DNA. It is suggested that free radical damage may lead to cancer. Sounds like an enemy to me. Enter the superhero to fight these villains: the Amazing Antioxidants. Antioxidants can help prevent damage to cells caused by free radicals. How, you ask? They neutralize the free radicals by providing the lost electrons to

What is a Tumor?

We have all heard the word “tumor” and simply think of a mass of tissue. But what is a tumor, really? The definition of tumor implies abnormal cell growth; this results in an abnormal lump or mass of tissue. Tumors (also referred to as a neoplasm) are not always cancerous (malignant); they can also be non-cancerous (benign). Benign tumors usually grow more slowly than malignant tumors…; however their growth can interfere with the ability of healthy tissues to thrive. At times, they may grow large enough to apply pressure to vital body organs resulting in serious health problems.

How to Live a Happy & Meaningful Life

There’s a plaque on my daughter’s wall: “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” I was thinking about the word “moments”. We require the use of so many of our moments in those mindless activities for general survival. You know, sleeping, eating, sleeping, eating some more. Add to that our routine activities such as working for a living, managing relationships, minding a home, planning a vacation, taking time to exercise, and the moments are used up faster than we can think about them. A cancer diagnosis…

How to Fight and Overcome Cancer

“You have cancer.” I gasped. The doctor said these words to my husband after a week-long hospital stay which included an assortment of medical tests… to determine the source of his unexplained pain. We were forced into the battle. No swords, no shields, no plans in place; however, the battle against cancer had begun. After the shock wore off, I will always remember the next conversation with my husband when the doctors left the room to give us privacy to cry together. The first words my husband said were: “I’ll fight this thing.” Tears of gratitude poured down my cheeks.

Financial Assistance for Cancer Patients

Cancer can be a financial burden for patients and their families due to the increased medical and prescription expenses incurred. In addition, unanticipated costs such as childcare, employment, transportation and household expenses all contribute to the need for financial assistance for cancer patients…. The key to navigating the financial issues is communication. First and foremost, be willing to communicate with your physicians about your financial assistance needs. They are your healthcare team and can refer you to resources available in the hospital’s business office. Ask them about the expected costs for your care before you begin treatment, if possible.

“CANCER” is a six-letter word

My husband was sent to the hospital a few months ago with familiar symptoms: abdominal pain radiating to his back. We expected the usual myriad of tests to provide the same result we had experienced before: ulcers. Ulcers are no piece of cake, but treatable. But now: cancer. Seriously? Our first reaction was to go into crisis mode. I couldn’t even say the word “cancer” without an extra swallow to choke it down. I resorted to referring to it as the “c” word but soon realized my word games were giving it more power than it deserved. I started to…

The drug, called Vernuraferib, is being used in several experimental trials across the United States. Doctors have discovered that certain types of lung cancer and melanoma are caused by genetic mutations within the patient’s DNA which this drug specifically targets. Melanoma patients who were undergoing chemotherapy were given this drug, and no longer needed additional treatment. Melanoma is the most common …

Christina Applegate’s Courageous Battle with Breast Cancer

As someone who made her living for many years as the sexy (although ditzy) daughter of Al Bundy on Married With Children, Christina Applegate knew as well as any actress the pressures to look good in Hollywood. Yet when she was diagnosed with breast cancer… in 2008 she decided rather quickly to have a double mastectomy. Her mother had also suffered from cancer and Christina inherited the BRCA1 mutation. Christina had a tough decision to make, but she rightly put her health above any Hollywood standards regarding her looks. The decision for any celebrity to come out about their cancer

Celebrating Survival in Style

A friend of mine from high school is an awesome cake decorator. She does it as a hobby and always posts pictures of her cakes on Facebook. Recently she posted that she had done a “booby cake” for a friend’s “survivor party”. The only “survivor” parties I had ever heard of are the ones where fans of the TV show Survivor get together to watch the show’s finale. She said the cake was a little too graphic to post on Facebook, but to email her if you wanted to see it. I was so intrigued by the idea of a…

Winning the War in the Fight Against Cancer!

Perhaps more than any other disease, dealing with and recovering from cancer is often thought of in the same terms as warfare. In the language used to describe recovering from cancer we hear words like courage, fight, battle, winning, and losing. Singer Carly Simon was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997. She said that in some ways cancer brought focus to her life. She is quoted as saying, “When you actually have a battle, it’s better than when you don’t know who to fight.” The battle against cancer… does invoke many of the same images used in war. It is

“Garden variety” breast cancer?

When my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer… last year I was amazed that the doctor called her at her office, during work hours, to tell her the news. I guess I thought these things were told to you in person, maybe with the support of a family member or friend by your side. I was even more surprised when we went to meet with him and he called her cancer “garden variety breast cancer”. I suppose that’s a good thing, but when you think of your mother and cancer, “garden variety” are not the next words you expect to

Crossing Items Off Your Bucket List

"As of lately in life, I've started really diving headfirst into writing a bucket list — and as quickly as I've been writing it, I've also been crossing it off. I'm a big believer in the power of positive thinking and I very much like to believe that the Zig Ziglers, Tony Robbins, and Buddhas in the world, really know what they're talking about. So it comes as no surprise that I'm a seeker outter of all things inspirational…, motivational, moving, etc whenever surfing the web…. whether it's for ideas of where in this big world to go to

“Inspiration” – by Katie Johnston

When I first started toying with what to write about this week, I went down three other possible avenues before finally detouring to other websites that stopped me in my tracks so suddenly, that I knew I wouldn’t be choosing a topic this time, but it would be choosing me. While perusing websites, reading the news, doing some research of my own; I stumbled upon an article at random that led me to a great quote that ironically led me to even more great inspirational quotes…… so alas, here’s some food for thought today. Among the first article I

Diet During Cancer Treatment

We are extremely excited to introduce Moffitt Cancer Center to the Know Cancer Community!   Moffitt is based out of Tampa, Fla., and focuses on the prevention and cure of cancer. It is one of the world’s most sophisticated cancer centers and has a staff of physicians & medical researchers who are among the best in their respective fields. As someone who has been through cancer, I fully recognize the role that diet plays in overall health and its importance during cancer treatment. Most of us recognize that food represents much more than nourishment and plays an important role

Alternative Treatment May Not Be So Alternative Anymore

The phrase “alternative medicine” comes with a lot of baggage.  To some patients, it offers a pathway to healing.  To others, it suggests charlatans and quacks. But to a growing number of health care professionals, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), the umbrella term for these practices, is a growing field with much to offer, particularly for cancer patients…. According to a recent report in the Journal of Patient Study, inpatient integrative medicine, a relatively new field of medical practice that combines CAM therapies with conventional treatments, has proven highly effective for pain relief, one of the most common and

Ice Age: Cryotherapy may be the future of cancer treatment

For more than 100 years, doctors have used extreme cold to destroy and prevent the spread of abnormal tissue growth, a method known as cryotherapy, to treat everything from unwanted freckles to stomach ulcers. Though early researchers suggested cryotherapy might be effective in treating cancer, it was originally determined to be too complicated. In recent years, however, cryotherapy research has once more come to the forefront as a legitimate alternative to cancer surgery.  With new technologies that prevent damage to healthy tissue and nearby organs, doctors have started using it to treat prostate and liver cancers…, and new

Pressing Pause: The day I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer

So often, my life has seemed to move in fast forward.  One minute I’m graduating college. The next I’m getting married and buying a house and starting a career. Now I’m quaking as I bring my first baby home from the hospital. Before I know it, I’m putting that same child on the school bus for her first day of school. Bang, zoom, zip.  All I can do is try to grab memories as they fly past, stuff them in my pocket and hope like hell they’ll still be there when things slow down and I have a moment to…

What Nobody Tells You About Major Surgery

I have always been pretty healthy, and my hospital experience had been limited to the labor and delivery of my three kids. I’ve never even had a cavity, let alone major surgery. So when I entered the hospital early on the morning of December 7 to undergo bilateral mastectomies…, there were some surprises. Walking My first big shock of the day was when the nurse came to take me to the OR for surgery—and she MADE ME WALK THERE! The movies always show patients being wheeled down the hall on a gurney while their loved ones hold their hands

Can changing your diet change your lungs?

Everyone knows smoking can cause lung cancer. In fact, smokers are ten times more likely to be diagnosed than non-smokers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Quitting smoking at any time decreases your risk of developing lung cancer,” says Christopher Azzoli, an oncologist at Memorial Sloane-Kettering Cancer Center in New York….  “Quitting smoking after a diagnosis of lung cancer can improve chance of cure, improve tolerance of and decrease side effects of treatment.” But besides trashing the Marlboros, a change of diet may also improve respiratory health, suggests research at the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute

Beyond Chemo: Reducing Stress Gives You an Edge Against Cancer

It may come as no surprise that happy people are healthy people (and vice versa). Researchers are finding that this may be especially important when it comes to cancer. Although treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation are typically essential for combating cancer, recent research shows that psychological health may be just as important to surviving—and perhaps even preventing—the disease. Eleven years ago, researchers at Ohio State University in Columbus began a clinical study called the Stress and Immunity Breast Cancer Project. Women with breast cancer… were divided into two groups: Some received counseling on topics such as learning

Doctors Make Progress On Personalized Cancer Prevention

With a cure for cancer still frustratingly absent, doctors argue that the best defense is prevention. In a press release from the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Washington, D.C., in April, Ernest Hawk, an oncologist with The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, stated that maintaining a healthy lifestyle… could effectively prevent “at least half of all cancer deaths”. It’s an impressive number and one that could potentially be even larger if doctors are able to create personalized lifestyle recommendations for each patient in their care. New research presented at last week’s meeting brings

Food and Cancer: How To Interpret the Research

There is no shortage of advertising and news articles about the health benefits of everything from ginger to green tea, but often claims are based on preliminary or incomplete research findings. Here are four questions to ask yourself when you’re reading about the latest health craze. The answers will help you navigate ‘superfood’ claims so that you can make educated decisions about whether or not you really need to eat, say, sea kelp. Have these claims been tested in humans? A recent study by researchers at the University of Michigan showed that sulforaphane—a chemical found in broccoli—destroyed breast cancer cells…

Cancer Doctors Recognize the Potential Benefits Of Yoga Therapy

Physicians are beginning to understand the relationship between stress and cancer. As a result, a growing number are advising patients to practice their downward and upward dogs as they undergo conventional cancer treatments like surgery and chemotherapy. By complementing the state-of-the-art biomedical therapies of Western medicine with practices like yoga and counseling, oncologists… hope to improve quality of life and symptoms while aggressively attacking cancer cells. There are many factors to consider when deciding which type of yoga therapy is best. Here are some guidelines that cancer patients can discuss with their physicians. Finding a Yoga Instructor A properly

Cancer Treatment: Five Drugs To Watch

Scientists may not have found a cure for cancer yet, but these five drugs could be the next best things: Denosumab Denosumab—a human monoclonal antibody developed by Amgen—targets RANKL, a protein essential for bone cell formation and normal function. In June, the drug, whose brand name is Prolia, was approved to treat osteoporosis. New research shows that the drug could also be effective against breast cancer…. Scientists have found that the RANKL protein appears to play more than a role in bone formation; it may also be activated by progesterone to cause breast cancer. Amgen scientists discovered that blocking
